âSo you said itâs running slow?â Mavis asked as she accepted Emilyâs laptop bag.
The two of them stood in Mavisâs office at Burton Technologies. Emily had been in here a few times before, although she tried not to bother her children at work if it could be helped. She was just as impressed by the nice office as she always had been. A large glass desk sat near the window, catching the sunlight and illuminating the place. Abstract art prints decorated the walls, but Mavis had managed to scatter in a few family photos. A particularly large one on her desk featured her cat, Gus. The carpet underneath was soft and squishy.
âYes. I wish I could tell you more, but youâd probably be able to take a look at it and figure out how to describe the problem much faster than I could,â Emily laughed. âIf it canât be fixed and I need to buy a new one, though, you just tell me.â
Mavis shook her head. âI highly doubt that will be the case. The computer isnât all that old, for one thing. Iâm going to guess it just needs some updating and maybe a thorough antivirus scan. Iâll get it going good as new.â
âAnd you wonât get in any kind of trouble if you send it over to your other department?â Emily asked. She knew that Mavis was high up on the food chain at this company, but that was all the more reason to make sure she didnât endanger her job. âI donât want you to get in trouble.â
âItâs fine, Mom,â Mavis insisted. âStop worrying.â
âAs if I could ever do that when it comes to you children,â Emily retorted. She chuckled. âYou sound just like you did when you were thirteen. âI know how to cross the street, Mom. You donât have to worry about me.â But I do, and I will!â
âThen you go be a worrywart, and Iâll get this computer taken care of. Iâll call you as soon as itâs ready. I do have a busy schedule today, though, so it might be a while.â As though to prove her point, the phone rang.
âItâs not a problem, dear. Iâll let you go. Goodbye!â Emily let herself out of the office and through the winding maze of hallways. This whole place carried the plastic smell of new electronics until she passed the breakroom, which smelled of incredibly strong coffee.
Back out in her car, Emily knew she couldnât just wait around for her computer to get done before she started writing again. She already had plenty of notes done by hand, and she had to get some of these posts made. Taking a left, she headed for the library.
âGood morning!â Mariam chirped as soon as she walked in. âCan I help you with anything?â
âYes, please.â Emily walked up and handed over her card. âIâd like to get signed in on one of your computers, if you donât mind.â
âNot a problem.â Mariam scanned Emilyâs library card into her system. âIt generates a one-time use code.
