“So you said it’s running slow?” Mavis asked as she accepted Emily’s laptop bag.

The two of them stood in Mavis’s office at Burton Technologies. Emily had been in here a few times before, although she tried not to bother her children at work if it could be helped. She was just as impressed by the nice office as she always had been. A large glass desk sat near the window, catching the sunlight and illuminating the place. Abstract art prints decorated the walls, but Mavis had managed to scatter in a few family photos. A particularly large one on her desk featured her cat, Gus. The carpet underneath was soft and squishy.

“Yes. I wish I could tell you more, but you’d probably be able to take a look at it and figure out how to describe the problem much faster than I could,” Emily laughed. “If it can’t be fixed and I need to buy a new one, though, you just tell me.”

Mavis shook her head. “I highly doubt that will be the case. The computer isn’t all that old, for one thing. I’m going to guess it just needs some updating and maybe a thorough antivirus scan. I’ll get it going good as new.”

“And you won’t get in any kind of trouble if you send it over to your other department?” Emily asked. She knew that Mavis was high up on the food chain at this company, but that was all the more reason to make sure she didn’t endanger her job. “I don’t want you to get in trouble.”

“It’s fine, Mom,” Mavis insisted. “Stop worrying.”

“As if I could ever do that when it comes to you children,” Emily retorted. She chuckled. “You sound just like you did when you were thirteen. ‘I know how to cross the street, Mom. You don’t have to worry about me.’ But I do, and I will!”

“Then you go be a worrywart, and I’ll get this computer taken care of. I’ll call you as soon as it’s ready. I do have a busy schedule today, though, so it might be a while.” As though to prove her point, the phone rang.

“It’s not a problem, dear. I’ll let you go. Goodbye!” Emily let herself out of the office and through the winding maze of hallways. This whole place carried the plastic smell of new electronics until she passed the breakroom, which smelled of incredibly strong coffee.

Back out in her car, Emily knew she couldn’t just wait around for her computer to get done before she started writing again. She already had plenty of notes done by hand, and she had to get some of these posts made. Taking a left, she headed for the library.

“Good morning!” Mariam chirped as soon as she walked in. “Can I help you with anything?”

“Yes, please.” Emily walked up and handed over her card. “I’d like to get signed in on one of your computers, if you don’t mind.”

“Not a problem.” Mariam scanned Emily’s library card into her system. “It generates a one-time use code.
